Self-care, the industry of caring for our physical and mental health, is a [$450-billion annual market](https://asdonline.com/blog/retail-news/what-self-care-trends-mean-for-retailers-in-2020/?ref=justincox.com). We spend **a lot* of money caring for ourselves. Yet, despite all that money spent, more than half of us [report feeling burned out](https://www.indeed.com/lead/preventing-employee-burnout-report?ref=justincox.com). So, what do we do about it?

As writers, we tend to spend far too much time in [a position that’s killing us](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/expert-answers/sitting/faq-20058005?ref=justincox.com) — and I’m not just talking about the symbolic death caused by rejection. As a result, we writers must protect and care for our physical and mental health. The alternative is burning out, which often appears as writer’s block. When we get stuck for too long, burnout turns into apathy, a challenging hole to climb out of.

Thankfully, there’s a lot we can do to care for ourselves. It should go without saying, but visit the doctor for wellness checks to keep your physical health in order. Practicing yoga or going for a walk outside helps improve our energy, breathing and often provides new ideas by letting our minds freely wander — not to mention the benefits of physical exercise.

As we approach the new year, it’s essential to consider building healthy habits. How are you going to take care of your physical and mental health in the new year?
