It’s been a few months since I watched season 4.0, but I finally got around to finishing the series. At this point, I’m not really sure what to think.

So Say We All

The destroyed planet Earth that was found at the end of 4.0 really was Earth, the home of the 13th tribe of Cobol and guess what? That thirteenth tribe were Cylons. At least their DNA signature matched that of the Cylon skin jobs. Apparently it’s where the real Final Five came from, some 2000 years ago.

Long story short, the Final Five developed the Cylon race and ended up creating Resurrection technology. So they were the creators of the race… sort of. Anyway, the identity of the final Cylon? Helen Tigh. That’s right, Tigh’s wife has been a Cylon all along. You might be thinking that Tigh killed Helen on New Caprica for helping the Cylons. Well guess what, she woke up on a Cylon Basestar — apparently before Resurrection was destroyed. Anyway, Tigh figures this out through unlocking memories while being on Earth, as do the rest of the Final Five.

Fast forward until the end of the series. Basically the whole thing hinges on Athena and Helo’s baby — remember the whole opera house thing? Anyway, apparently their baby is the key to the future of humanity, but no one really knows why. So Boomer — the bad Number 8 — brings Helen Tigh from the Cylons to the Rebel Cylons in an attempt to make amends for going against her units in the split. The whole thing was basically a sham to steal Athena and Helo’s baby so that they could run tests on it to see how to recreate Resurrection.

Fast forward a bit more and Adama decides to take a volunteer suicide mission to jump Galactica into the Cylon home in a recuse mission for the baby. An epic battle happens that ends with a truce that is broken by Chief Tyrol. In the end Galactica jumps out as the Cylon home blows up. But where did they jump?

Athena and Helo’s baby had been drawing pictures — small dots on a page — for awhile. Starbuck (who by the way found her crashed Viper and her body on Earth so has no idea who she really is) discovered that the pictures she was drawing were really musical notes that just so happened to be the notes for the song that activated the Final Five at the end of season 3.0 (which is an awesome song by the way). Anyway, not knowing what that meant she assigned numbers to the notes trying to see if there was some deeper meaning in them. Well, turns out it was the jump coordinates to… well, Earth. But Earth as we know it, not the destroyed one they found at the end of season 4.0.

They found Earth and then spread out severing all ties with each other. Makes sense.

So, in the end, the fleet found Earth after all. But here’s the kicker: it was earth 150,000 years ago at the dawn of civilization. So they all decided to spread out around the world and create population centers. They got rid of their technology and decided to start from scratch. But here’s what I don’t get: after spending a few years trying to build a new community when they finally get a place to call home they split up and live in seclusion? I mean, Adama took the president off to bury her and then lived on a hill by himself. His son decided to go off and explore the planet alone. Tyrol wanted to be alone. Helo, Athena and their child presumably went off by themselves. Even stranger, Dr. Cottle volunteers for the suicide mission, but Adama won’t let him participate because “the fleet can’t afford to loose a doctor.” Um, they why spread people all over the world once the mission is complete? Why the sudden break in community? I didn’t get it.

Fast forward another 150,000 years to present day Earth. Apparently the vision of 6 that Giaus had been seeing the whole time — and the vision of Giaus 6 had been seeing — were really angels sent to help guide their way. The remains of Helo and Athena’s baby were just discovered and she was being called the mother of civilization. But why? It never explained why she was important. And speaking of angels, apparently that’s what Starbuck has been since returning from Earth, seemingly out of nowhere.

After offloading everyone on Earth, the ships were sent to fly into the sun. See ya' Galactica!

Overall the series was pretty great, but it seemed to be pretty downhill from the amazing finale to season 3.0. After the shocking discovery of Earth at the end of 4.0, everything seemed very forced — almost as if the writers had written themselves into a corner they couldn’t quite figure out how to get out of. There were a lot of leaps made in season 4.5 that, given the pace of the series to that point, seemed to be very out of place. Don’t get me wrong, I like it, but how could they not end with some sort of awesome Adama led “so say we all” speech about creating the new humanity? Again, spreading out all over the world? Come on…

After the awesome ending to season 3.0 I was really excited to get Battlestar Galactica: Razor from Netflix. After about five minutes in I was very disappointed to find out Razor wouldn’t continue the story line and, instead, would follow the Pegasus from the moment of the Cylon attack to the moment it was destroyed. Lame. However, the movie wasn’t a total loss.

Battlestar Galactica: Razor

There were some, all but minor, revelations that have something to do with the entire series as a whole. Namely forty years ago, at the end of the first Cylon war, then Viper pilot “Husher” Adama found a factory where the Cylons were experimenting on humans — essentially attempting to build the first skin jobs. It was also revealed that at the moment the first Cylon war ended, Laura Roslin’s family had been killed and she left her little sister to die. When the war ended, her sister had been taken by a Heavy Raider, never to be seen again… maybe? We’ll see if it plays out again. Finally, Razor revealed that the original Hybrid Basestar was being protected by a group of original Raiders and hiding in deep space. Significance? Who knows because Battlestar Pegasus blew it up. Anyway, once Razor was out of the way it was finally onto the real story at hand, season 4.0.

There are a few, seemingly minor, things that happen throughout the course of season 4.0 that are still worth mentioning. The Cylons that became active at the end of season 3.0 — Colonel Tigh, Chief Tyrol, Samuel Anders, and Tory Foster — remain living in secret. Cally, Tyrol’s wife, discovered the secret and Tory flushes her out an airlock. Tory also starts sleeping with Giaus in an effort to “get information from him” but instead really enjoys it. Giaus continues to build his religious following and, in the process, stands up to the government and people that want to kill him. Oh, and he miraculously heals a child. No big deal.

The biggest story line of season 4.0 actually had very little to do with the humans. With the 3’s, the Lucy Lawless-bots, shelved, the 2’s (Starbuck’s creepy manipulating “husband”), 6’s (Giaus’ girlfriend), and 8’s (the Boomers) decided that finding the Final Five and working with the humans is probably God’s desire. On the other hand, the 1’s (crazy preacher guy), 4’s (doctor man) and the 5’s (first Cylon discovered) decided that knowing the identities of the Final Five and working with the humans is a horrible idea and, with the help of the 8 that tired to kill Adama, decide to kill off the “rebels.” Did you follow that? Anyway, the war only lasts a few minutes because the “rebels” basically get blown to pieces with no Resurrection ship in range.

[Note: As I typed this out I just realized that there are no 7's. Am I missing something or will this be revealed in 4.5?]

Meanwhile Starbuck, who despite being gone for two months and everyone thinking she died, shows up and only thinks she’s been gone for six hours. On top of that, her Viper is basically brand new without any computer data, scratches or even signs of use. Needless to say everyone thinks she’s a Cylon. As the Fleet continues to jump away from the Nebula that activated the hidden Cylons and where she reappeared, she starts to go nuts. Her “feeling” of how to find Earth starts to slip away. So, against the President’s wishes, Adama gives Starbuck the Demetrius and a small crew lead by Helo to follow her “feeling” to Earth.

Comet or a Basestar?

While on their “mission,” Starbuck’s crew grows tired of her crazy ramblings and paintings of a star system that don’t seem to make any sense. Then, on the last day of their 58 day tour, the Demetrius crew runs into a horribly damaged Heavy Raider with none other than Leoben Conoy, Starbuck’s creepy “husband” from New Caprica. Instead of killing him again, she listens to him and learns of the civil war and the rebel factions desire to work with the humans. Needless to say her crew thinks she’s nuts and decides to mutiny and go against her orders. In the Mexican standoff that ensues, Anders shoots Gaeta in the knee and Starbuck decides to take a Raptor with Athena, Anders, and some other pilot who ends up dyeing, along with Leoben, to see if the Cylon civil war is true.

Starbuck sees her crazy paintings realized when they jump into the battlefield and discover the whole thing is true. Discovering that working with the rebel Cylons may be the best way to find Earth, they jump the somewhat destroyed Basestar back to the Demetrius and then jump back to the fleet together.

It’s decided that the only way to end the Cylon civil war, and in turn get rid of the threat from the 1’s, 4’s, and 5’s, is to jump to the Resurrection Hub and destroy it. The Resurrection Hub is exactly what it sounds like, the one Hub in the universe that controls all the other Resurrection ships. Destroying it would essentially make all Cylons mortal. In the process, they will have to reactive a 3, since she knows the identities of the Final Five, and get her off the hub.

A plan is formed and half the Viper wing is moved to the damaged Basestar and then, randomly, the Hybrid controlling the Basestar, jumps off starting to hunt the Resurrection Hub — the Hybrid’s are the only Cylons capable of finding the Hub. After a number of jumps, they find it and the attack is on. Helo and an 8 board the Hub, once the Vipers took out it’s FTL, and pick up Lucy Lawless bot. The plan worked.

Resurrection Hub goes boom!

Back with the Fleet, The 3 decides to take all of the humans on the Basestar hostage until the four hiding Cylons are under her care. Tory goes with her when the 3 leaves Galactica. In a pretty tense moment, Tigh decides to finally tell Adama his secret and proposes a solution to the standoff, flush him out the airlock. Tigh ands over the identities of the other hidden Cylons who join him in the airlock. All the while Starbuck is trying to figure out what was so special about her “new” Viper. Then she figures it out — it’s the only ship in the fleet that’s picking up a Colonial transponder code pointing the way to Earth. How’d she know to look? Anders and Tyrol told her as they were being taken into custody. President, yes, president, Lee Adama decides the best way to handle this is by working with the Cylons and sharing the information. Everyone is in agreement that, while a long shot, it seems plausible. After all, the Final Five are supposed to lead the way to Earth. So, together with the rebel Basestar, the Fleet jumps to Earth(?).

Earth(?)

Season 4.0 ends with the main cast, including the rebel Cylons, on Earth(?) standing at the ruins of the temple of Athena. PUSH IN Adama and the 6’s confusion. FADE TO BLACK. End of the season.

A few things to note:

I wrote Earth with the (?) at the end because something doesn’t quite seem right. Granted there is a season 4.5 but a destroyed planet can’t be Earth, can it?

I have to assume we haven’t seen the end of the other side of Cylons. Despite the Resurrection Hub being destroyed, I have to think there is a group of 1’s, 4’s and 5’s that survived and want some revenge.

Tigh had been frakking the prisoner 6 and, guess what?, she’s pregnant!

Lucy Lawless-bot mentioned that four of the Final Five reside in the Fleet. What does that mean for the final Cylon? Surely their not in the Cylon fleet. So who is it? Where is it? Is it the 7-series? There’s only a few episodes left.

President Adama issued a full amnesty to each of the Final Five Cylons, allowing them to decide if they want to go with the Cylons or remain with the humans. All of this is probably mute considering it seems both factions are going to have to work together to figure out what really is going on.

I’m still wondering what happened to Starbuck while she was gone for two months, but I’m not really sure we’re going to get to find out. Maybe it’ll go the way of Shepherd Book’s true history in Firefly and become one of life’s great mysteries.

There isn’t really much more to say. One Cylon remains. Earth(?) has been found. No one has any idea what to do. I can’t wait for season 4.5.

Season 2.5 left me with mixed emotions. New Caprica had been surrendered to the Cylons and the remaining fleet had jumped away. Season 3 starts with a few episodes showing what life is like under Cylon rule; in a word: hell. A number of people have been taken prisoner, namely Tigh and Starbuck (more on that in a minute), while others have simply disappeared. An underground resistance, lead by Tigh, Anders and Tyrol, is fighting back and even resorts to suicide bombers. A group of humans become a “defense force” and are basically the Cylons secret police. Like I said, hell. Oh yeah, and Tigh lost his eye. And yes, that rhymes.

BSG Season 3

Starbuck is being held “prisoner” in a fully furnished apartment where she’s forced to live with the manipulating Cylon whom she interrogated earlier in the series. Apparently he loves her and wants her to do the same. Instead, she finds ways to kill him, yet he still comes back in a new body. Creepy. At one point in the season, he even brings in a child and convinces Starbuck it’s hers, created from the ovary stolen when she was on Caprica. The kids turns out to not be hers but the whole notion basically destroys her (more on this in a minute).

Long story short, despite it being nearly four months later Galactica had not given up on New Caprica. They had just been planing and trying to find a way to get through the Cylon-blocked radio space. They do and a rescue plan is put into place. The solution: using Galactica’s very own Cylon-pilot <strike>Boomer</strike> Athena. She can walk right into the Cylon HQ without even drawing any attention, steal all the keys to the grounded ships and initiate the escape. This is where things started to get awesome.

Galactica jumped into atmospheric orbit of New Caprica and, while falling toward the surface, launched all it’s alert Vipers. Just before the point of impact, it jumped away. This was one incredibly awesome moment in TV. I’m talking wicked awesome. The Vipers laid easy waste to the unsuspecting Raders in the air. While the Vipers, and marines on the ground, were helping clear the way for the escapees, Galactica jumped back into New Caprica orbit to distract the Cylon Basestars. They were taking a heavy beating when the Pegasus jumped into help. They had left all their Vipers defending the Fleet, and came into basically run a kamikaze strike on the Basestars. This gave the escapees enough time to jump to safety.

An eye-less Tigh watches Galactica fall from the sky.

After the dust settled, the Fleet had jumped to safety though the Pegasus was a total loss. Giaus, not having been rescued, left with Caprica-6 to join the Cylons. He ended up spending a good deal of time with them and became convinced he was a Cylon. Towards the end of his stay, he cut ties with Caprica-6 in favor of Lucy Lawless-bot. They were conducting their own mission trying to discover the Final Five. To this point only seven of the twelve Cylon models were known. Giaus learns from Lawless-bot that the Final Five are something very special, and not even known to the other models. Her pursuit of this knowledge ends up having her model “boxed” by the other Cylons. We won’t be seeing her anymore.

Halfway through the season the Fleet, running out of food, finds a planet where they can harvest algae that can be used as food. After two weeks on the “Algae Planet” the Cylons show up. Instead of killing everyone, they want to talk. Apparently the “Eye of Jupiter” is on the planet and that Eye is the next marker on the road to Earth. Chief Tyrol, in another of his “awakening” moments, is drawn to a cave formation that holds a temple supposedly housing the Eye of Jupiter.

Meanwhile a nearby star is preparing to go supernova and destroy everything in the area. This, it turns out, is the actual Eye. At the moment of evacuation from Algae Planet, the Final Five are revealed to Lucy Lawless-bot — right before she’s boxed. In the exchange, Giaus is captured by the Chief and returned to Galactica.

It turns out Giaus is not a Cylon, he just wanted to be. In actuality Giaus just wants to belong to something, to be important. Instead he’s just pathetic. He spends the second half of the season in a jail cell awaiting his trial (more on that to come).

While the Cylons were hanging out near the Algae Planet, Helo killed Sharon/Athena so that she could wake up on the Basestar and get her kid back. During the evacuation of New Caprica, Lawless-bot found the half-Cylon kid and took it. The rightful mother wanted it back. So, with the help of Caprica-6, Sharon/Athena took the kid back to Galactica.

Look familiar?

During the exploration of the temple devoted to the Eye of Jupiter, Helo noticed the “eye” depicted looked a lot like a painting he saw on Starbuck’s apartment wall back on Caprica. Turns out little miss Thrace was really “special” after all. Come to find out, she’d been doodling the Eye since she was a child, all the while her mother telling her she is special. Tie this up with her fake Cylon husband, whom she might have actually loved, telling her she has a destiny and mix in being devastated that her kid wasn’t hers, Starbuck officially hit the edge. She broke. She started seeing things: the girl, the Cylon, all kinds of things. It all culminated towards the end of the season when, flying over a huge electrical storm (that looked a lot like the Eye of Jupiter) Starbuck’s Viper exploded in front of Apollo. Yeah. Game over.

In the following weeks a lot of things happened: Anders got stupid drunk in grief, broke his leg, and decided to become a Viper pilot while fraking the President’s assistant. Giaus started writing a manifesto and had it smuggled throughout the Fleet inciting a union strike, lead by Chief Tyrol. We learned that back on New Caprica Apollo and Starbuck hooked up, decided to leave their significant others for each-other, and instead Starbuck married Anders the next morning. Cold. Also back on New Caprica, President Roslin and Admiral Adama shared “a moment.” A lot happened.

Fast-forward to the end of the season: everything was culminating with the trial of Giaus Baltar. Apollo quits Galactica to defend Giaus and, in an eloquent defense, actually gets Giaus off. What he said made a lot of sense but it should would have been more fun to see him thrown out the airlock. That was all well and good but the big events of the finale had nothing to do with Giaus at all, it had to do with the Final Five.

The Fleet jumped into the orbit of a nebula, another marker on the trail to Earth. At the moment they entered orbit, a very large number of Cylons jumped into orbit and power was lost across the entire Fleet. While most people were scrambling to get it up and running again, four instead were trying to figure out the source of music there were hearing. The four were Colonel Tigh, Chief Tyrol, Samuel Anders, and Tory Foster (President Roslin’s assistant). Evidently the power outage and the music were connected and somehow activated all of them. An entire season had gone by without revealing any Cylons and in the last five minutes four become known. Tigh tells all of them that finding out he’s a Cylon doesn’t change the last forty years of his life that he spent in service to Adama and that none of them should give up on their friends now. So instead of brooding, or trying to figure out what it all means, they all run to action stations just as power is restored to the Fleet.

Now here is where it gets fun. Let’s go back to my vary first BSG post. Here’s what I said:

My other guess for a Cylon is Colonel Tigh just because I don’t like him very much.

Well look at that. A bold prediction I made was actually true. Crazy. The revelation of the four out of the Final Five wasn’t the only big moment at the end of season 3, there were actually two more.

Apollo, despite having quit, decides to take a Viper and get back in the game. While heading toward targets, an unidentified bogy appears on DRADUS so Apollo goes to investigate. The bogy is a better pilot than Apollo and turns out to be Starbuck. Is she the fifth of the Final Five? I mean, Apollo saw the Viper explode in the storm. Starbuck, seeing Apollo’s (and my) confusion, simply says this:

Don’t freak out, it really is me. It’s going to be ok. I’ve been to Earth. I know where it is and I will lead us there.

Excuse me, what? I think this means Starbuck is a Cylon for one reason, and it’s not that she has seemingly come back from the dead — though that is a good indication: Lucy Lawless-bot’s secret mission involved having her unit killed time and time again with the purpose of being reborn. In this process she discovered that there was “something beautiful between life and death.” This place, it turns out, was the opera house that Giaus had visions of in season one. When the Final Five were revealed to Lawless-bot, she was also in the opera house, seemingly the place between life and death. She walked up to one of the Five and said “I didn’t realize it was you, I’m sorry I mistreated you.” Now if Starbuck is a Cylon, then it’s probably a safe bet that opera house is on Earth and that she saw it between life and death. Either that or somehow she didn’t die when her Viper exploded. I have no idea. It was pretty crazy.

The final big reveal at the end of season 3 took place in the final seconds: we’re shown that the fleet is eerily close to Earth. Like the real one. Like, we’re shown the United States from orbit. Looks like the myths were true afterall and they really are on the right path. Crazy awesome.

The last five minutes of the season was so awesome I went and found it on YouTube. Unfortunately the moron who posted it disabled embedding so you have to actually click a link to see it. It’s pretty awesome and contains everything I’ve been talking about for the last five minutes and is set to one hell of an awesome rendition of All Along the Watchtower. Speaking of, if you happen to know where to find said song, let me know. It’s not on Amazon MP3 or iTunes.

So the cliffhangers left to ponder before Battlestar Galactica: Razor are seemingly few:

Is Starbuck the final of the Final Five Cylons? If she’s not, how did she survive? And where did she come from? Vipers don’t have FTL, do they?

Now that the Final Five have been activated, what’s their purpose? Are they special because they were born, much like Sharon and Helo’s baby? And what does that mean for Tyrol and Cally’s baby?

What is the Cylon endgame? It’s become clear over the last season that the Cylons don’t seem to be hell-bent on destroying they human race anymore. They do want to find Earth as well, but it seems that the humans have almost bored the Cylons. Strange.

That’s about all I can think of. If Starbuck isn’t a Cylon then there better be some sort of LOST style flashback showing exactly what happened after her fraking Viper blew up.

After almost two thousand words, that’s all I’ve got.

Update 2: Finally, the video has been found and added at the bottom.

Update: Thanks to TV Squad for taking my tip. <strike>I’m still looking for the video.</strike>

I’m watching the Magic game and at halftime there is a new version of the ABC House commercials they’ve been running (which are brilliant by the way) and it shows Dominic Monaghan, Charlie from LOST, playing foosball with Courtney Cox, who has a new show this fall. <strike>At one point in the commercial someone says to Monaghan “Aren’t you dead?” to which he replies “I was.”</strike> After seeing the video again, I realize that my recollection was slightly off. Towards the end Patrick Dempsey, challenging Dominic Monaghan, says “you’re so dead” to which Monaghan replies “actually, I was.”

Ok, what?

We all watched Charlie drown at the end of season three. It was horrible. He sacrificed himself to destroy the Looking Glass so the Freighter could be contacted. But what’s with this tease? “I was.” Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have been critical of ABC for creating LOST promotions and commercials in the past that tend to offer more information then they like, could this be an example?

We’re at the beginning of nine very long months before the final season of LOST begins and almost zero hints were dropped in the finale as to what could potentially happen. But Charlie coming back? It would explain why Hurley has been carrying around the guitar case since returning to the Island. Does that mean setting off the bomb really did reset things? Oh man this is going to drive me nuts.

After seventeen years, Jay Leno is FINALLY leaving The Tonight Show, a move that has been five years in the making. While there is really only one thing about Leno’s show that’s funny — Headlines — I’ve been watching bits and pieces over the last week to see just how he’s going to close things out. Conan, his replacement, closed things off with two weeks to destroying the set, classic remotes, hilarious videos and a heartfelt and classy thank you session. Leno, on the other hand, has shown a few video montages of fake interviews, politicians who have appeared on Tonight, and Leno talking to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not exactly funny stuff or really anything all that memorable. Either there isn’t anything clip worthy in Leno’s seventeen years or the guy has no idea how to properly close things out. This, of course, might have something to do with the fact that he’s not actually going anywhere and all that’s really changing is the name and time of his show. But that <strike>horrible decision</strike> is subject for another day.

Disdain much?

So I ask, on Jay Leno’s final episode of The Tonight Show does anyone care? Or are you just happy that it means we’re only three days away from The Tonight Show with Conan O’Biren?

Update: While it may look like I have basically stolen TV Squad’s post idea here, I’ll have you know that I originally wrote this last night at 10:52 pm. So, if anything, they stole my idea. Ha! Take that interwebs!

If you follow my site then you know that I’ve been a little vocal about the fate of both Chuck and Dollhouse. Both are pretty great shows that have been sitting on the brink of elimination but this weekend their respected networks announced they would both be back in some form in the fall!

Check out their sweet guns. Related: these are interesting examples of marketing tv shows that I'd rather not delve into.

There is, of course, a catch. Both shows will undergo budget cuts and possible short seasons. TV Squad conjured that one of the Chuck cast members might have to go. While budget concessions could really effect both shows, especially the futuristic-esq Dollhouse, a renewal is a very good thing.

While re-watching a few episodes of Firefly earlier today I realized that the final moments of both Dollhouse and Chuck are equivalent to when River Tam kills a number of security guards and proclaims “no power in the verse can stop me.” I like game changing moments in TV. TV, unlike movies, allow many hours of learning about a character and getting to like them. Then when something completely contrary to what you know happens, it’s really great and completely unexpected. While River’s full potential wasn’t realized on the small screen, I’m glad that Dollhouse and Chuck will at least have the opportunity.

Hey west coasters, SPOILER WARNING.

That finale was pretty much awesome. The way everything played out, from Miles asking what everyone was thinking: “what if dropping the bomb down there causes the incident you’re hoping to prevent” to Jacob showing up in all of our cast members lives. Here’s what I think I know and what my thoughts are for the final season:

Jacob has always been the good guy. He’s done everything to make sure certain people were on the island. The other, unnamed person, is the bad guy. He’s wanted Jacob dead for hundreds of years and has finally found his loophole. How this other guy appeared as Locke for a few days or, I assume, showed up as Ben’s daughter to convince him to follow Locke’s orders, I have no idea. Perhaps he’s who the one responsible for all the other “sightings” in the past from Eco’s brother to Christian Shepherd. Now that he has gotten Ben to kill Jacob, everything changes. But I don’t know how.

Richard is just a pawn. Who he really works for is questionable, maybe he’s just some sort of Island intermediary. I’m not really sure. But whoever these “good guys” are, the whole “shadow of the statue” deal, they really are the good guys. They do, in fact, work for Jacob. But are they too late? Can they stop this other person without Jacob? I don’t know.

Would the Incident have occurred without Juliet setting the bomb off (oh man was that crazy)? I guess it’s a moot point but I’m guessing history is playing out as it was supposed to. I’m guessing that Daniel was, in fact, wrong after all.

So the bomb went off and we ended with a white screen. No hint of what’s to come, no teaser — save for the awesome opening eye — nothing. So what exactly happened when the bomb went off? Did the Island skip in time again, did it course correct? Did it reset? I’m not sure.

The whole episode, at least as far as Jacob was concerned, had to do with people having a choice for the course of their lives. Had Kate decided to stop stealing as a kid she would have never been on flight 815 and so forth. So will the final season show us what could have been? Or will we see what happened as a result of their poor past decisions? I really have no idea. Are you noticing a theme here?

The fact of the matter is that the sense of mystery is completely intact. There are a million possibilities for the final season and I’m pretty happy about it. Needless to say, this finale was a game changer it’s just not clear in what way. I love it.

Update: After some looking around online for the book Jacob was reading while Locke fell out of the window, I discovered the title is Everything that Rises Must Converge. The plot summary from Amazon sounds pretty similar:

Collection of nine short stories by Flannery O’connor, published posthumously in 1965. The flawed characters of each story are fully revealed in apocalyptic moments of conflict and violence that are presented with comic detachment.

That’s a pretty good summary of what we know to be true about LOST and could possibly be the only bit of foreshadowing we’re going to get.

What did you think?

Last week the season (series?) finale of Dollhouse aired on Fox. I gave my initial reaction to the show, which is Joss Whedon’s latest series, a while back. Over the second half of the short season the show really took off getting exceedingly more interesting and captivating which each episode. The show seemed to stop focusing on the individual doll “missions” and instead on the overall story arc encompassing the elusive Alpha.

In the finale it was revealed that Alpha, brilliantly played by Alan Tudyk aka Firefly’s Wash, became self-aware — more or less — and started reacting based on memories and other instances. We had seen this a few times throughout the season, once with Victor’s attraction to Sierra, and on multiple occasions with Echo. As if self-awareness that wasn’t enough, Alpha accidentally had all forty-two of his prior personalities loaded into his head all at once. To top it all off, Alpha was a former prisoner and generally bad guy. All of this combined to turn Alpha into the lunatic that cut up half the staff and escaped the Dollhouse.

When Alpha comes back to the Dollhouse and steals Echo and puts her through the same process he went through, loading all of her previously used personalities into her head at once. The idea seemed to be that Alpha and Omega could rule as gods doing whatever they pleased. The difference, is that Echo’s true personality shined through and showed her just how twisted Alpha had become. So she fought back.

At the end of the episode, after Echo had been re-whiped and returned to the Dollhouse, in the last second of the show, it’s true greatness was exposed: Echo has become self-aware. The implications for this could be awesome, though much like Chuck, these may not be realized do to possible cancelation. It’s sad really, because Dollhouse and Chuck are great shows that deserve to be renewed and ended in potentially game changing ways. Whereas shows that absolutely suck will have no problem getting renewed and a horrible talkshow host will get a daily hour long slot. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

I’m off on a tangent. Bottom line is that Dollhouse had an enjoyable freshmen season and I hope to see what it produces in year two.
