Ok, so I don’t even know what to do with this. Jerry Seinfeld was tipped to be the new spokesperson for Microsoft. I guess they wanted to combat the very clever Mac vs. PC ads that Apple has been running for a few years now. I like Jerry Seinfeld, I even liked the HP commercial he did last summer, but this… well, let’s just say I don’t have a clue what the point is nor how it’s supposed to sell Windows. In fact, I don’t really know what to say about it. I’m kind of dumbfounded that such a large, and at times brilliant, company could think this made sense:
Maybe I’m not seeing this right. Maybe my Apple love has blinded me. Maybe. What do you think? Does this commercial make a bit of sense to you? Let me know in the comments.
I’ve gotten pretty tired of the commercials that both McDonalds and KFC are running during the Olympics advertising their “new” chicken sandwiches. I think McDonalds is calling theirs homestyle. I don’t know why they both just don’t give up and call it what it really is, the same chicken sandwich that Chick-Fil-A has been making for some fifty years. I mean they both are nothing but chicken, pickles and bread.
They don't call it the 'original' chicken sandwich for nothing.
I haven’t tried the KFC one. KFC is, well, not good so there isn’t really a reason to go there but I did try the McDonalds one when they gave them away for free. Let’s just say Chick-Fil-A doesn’t have anything to worry about.
Lack of taste isn’t stopping McDonalds and KFC from advertising though. The best (that really depends on how you define best) is the one McDonalds is running showing all the Olympic athletes eating the chicken sandwich. I’m sure that’s exactly what happens. I mean, I know Michael Phelps eats something like 10,000 calories a day so obviously he goes to McDonalds and eats a “homestyle” chicken sandwich and some fries and he’s good for the day and ready to get back into the pool. Yeah, right.
If I’m in the mood for a fast food chicken sandwich, which isn’t very often, then I’ll be sure to stick with Chick-Fil-A — unless of course it’s Sunday.
Earlier this evening I went to the Amway Arena (how lame is that?) to watch the Predators work the Saber Cats like it’s, well, like it’s their job. One thing about the Predators is that they have sold pretty much every bit of everything they do to some sponsor. They play on Hummer Field, there is a T.G. Lee milk toss, a Sports Authority throw, an official post-game party destination, etc, etc. Seemingly after every-other down Tiffany, a local Monster, comes out for some sort of promotion on the field. Some are tame and involve people throwing things, others end up with her taking her shirt off. At halftime Tiffany’s partner, Drunky the Bear, yes, Drunky the Bear, comes out to do some sort of stunt. This week involved Mini-Drunky, his sidekick, jumping from the rafters onto the field. Now, I don’t know if it’s this way at other AFL games, but we here in Orlando know how to sell out and go wild. Predators games are like no other sporting event I’ve ever been to and are a ton of fun. They’re wild, fast, and usually involve a good deal of quality football. All the sideshow nature of the between-the-plays antics doesn’t do anything to take away from the game, it just makes us look a minor league baseball team.
Tonight the new season of Deadliest Catch started and Discovery decided to update their logo and advertising to coincide. While the corporate logo is cleaner (and beautiful in HD) the star of their upgrade is their new ad campaign, The World is Just Awesome. It’s cute, clever, and pretty addictive — which sums up Discovery to a T. Check it out, it’s worth a watch.
The people over at The Street, the website where Jim Cramer gives you all kinds of wonderful stock tips, have recently put together a short video covering the buying habits of Mac owners. Citing research from a Mindset Media survey of 7500 Mac and PC owners, they list the following Mac owner characteristics:
Purchase teeth whitening products
Average 5 new pairs of sneakers a year
Prefer organic food
Love Starbucks
Drive hybrid cars
Are perfectionists
Pay for downloaded music
Are liberal
Prefer notebook computers to desktops
Drive station wagons
Consider themselves “green” and are willing to pay more for green technology
Are far more satisfied with their computer purchase (70% vs 59% of PC owners).
Ok, so I’ll admit that A LOT of those things ring true. I enjoy my Aquafresh Extreme Clean Whitening toothpaste and I do drive a hybrid car, but station wagon? Come on. And five pairs of sneakers a year? I’m still rocking the same sneakers from two years ago. I might pick up a new pair of sandals every year or so, but not five. Though I do pay for music and am pretty happy with my computer purchase(s).
